More information emerging regarding the Crown funding for the training "courses" held at the camp; WINS and the NZ Army have jointly sponsored courses for young people in the Uruweras, but the specific courses held at the camp in question were funded by Tuhoe only.
Paul Buchanan has been interviewed and is stressing the difference between domestic terrorism and guerrilla/irregular "warriors." Terrorism is a word that's been significantly misinterpreted and misused in the new climate, and doesn't fully cover what 4GW represents to a nation.
If the police allegations are correct then these training camps were teaching guerrilla-style tactics for an ongoing insurgency, and not showy acts of violence. Given that a terrorist act (blowing up a bus, for example) has a significantly shorter half-life in terms of media coverage and overall effect on a nation-state, it is more worrying to me that these diverse groups weren't building a giant fertiliser bomb.
Buchanan also suggested that only the firearms charges would "stick." Because the alleged activities don't meet the necessary definition of terrorism, terrorism-related charges would not be laid, even though police have mentioned the possibility of charges under the Act.
"The police need to produce the hard evidence that tells us these people were a clear and present danger to the security of the country."
Small-scale (~100 people) protests have occurred during court appearances by the arrested men and women.
